East Saint Louis Toodle-oo, Duke Ellington

I personally loved this song despite never really liking jazz before this. In class today we talked about Duke Ellington and his different style of music compared to everyone else at the time. He called his music "Jungle Music". I find it so intriguing the way he has the dark and uniform constant string playing and then will have his solo trumpet jump all around in a very light and carefree way. I love the juxtaposition it creates. The trumpet seems to almost growl at the end. It has a unique effect when it goes into the solo. Like all of the jazz that I know it has such a nice feel to it with how smooth it is. Duke Ellington really has a nice sound to his song. It sounds so unique and timeless. This song makes me feel very sinister and sly. I almost feel like a villain in a movie while I listen to it. This song is very cool in the sense of just how different it is when compared to everything else we have covered in class so far this semester. I think Duke Ellington is very talented and made a truly timeless piece with this song.

  1. Hi K! I think that is legit. Jazz is way cool. I also really loved how you said how smooth it is. I definitely feel too relaxed when listening it, and how interesting it is that others feel different things when listening to Jazz, because its way unique. Duke Ellington must have transformed music, because of the way his sound sounded different to what the usual music was. His use of harmonies is super good, and how he could harmonize unusual sounds for example a trumpet to a piano! crazy!!!

  2. I definitely agree when you said that it's intriguing by having the dark kind of theme sound being played by the string instruments, and the light melody is being played by the trumpet. I feel like it's a weird combination, but I also agree that it's absolutely unique having one melody the exact opposite of another melody. While one is kind of sad and dark, another one is pretty steady but light and happy. Anyways, great post!!
