"Gospel Ship" By The Carter Family

 I love the feel of this song. It has such an authentic feel with the old recording style. It represents a very American and even Human theme of waiting and hoping for the peaceful ending after this life, or in this case the gospel ship. It represents the Christian history of our country and especially the deep south. This song feels like the journey that we call the human experience is over. I can picture this song to credits of my life after I die (Hopefully that is a long way away). I like how peaceful it is. It has a very earthy feel that I find really comforting. This reminds me of scenes in movies where they are sitting on the porch watching the sunset. I thought it was super interesting in class today when we talked about the separation of gospel music and popular music. It shows how strict the religion was then and how much bigger a part it played in the culture back then. East Saint Louis Toodle-oo, Duke Ellington

I personally loved this song despite never really liking jazz before this. In class today we talked about Duke Ellington and his different style of music compared to everyone else at the time. He called his music "Jungle Music". I find it so intriguing the way he has the dark and uniform constant string playing and then will have his solo trumpet jump all around in a very light and carefree way. I love the juxtaposition it creates. The trumpet seems to almost growl at the end. It has a unique effect when it goes into the solo. Like all of the jazz that I know it has such a nice f eel to it with how smooth it is. Duke Ellington really has a nice sound to his song. It sounds so unique and timeless. This song makes me feel very sinister and sly. I almost feel like a villain in a movie while I listen to it.  This song is very cool in the sense of just how different it is when compared to everything else we have covered in class so far this semester.
